Scour modeling based on immersed boundary method: A pathway to practical use of three-dimensional scour models

چکیده

Local scour around structures is an important hydraulic phenomenon that involves multiple coupled physical processes, including turbulent flow, sediment transport, and the evolution of erodible bed. This paper presents a new three-dimensional (3D) model, ibScourFoam, which based on immersed boundary method. model capable dealing with complex thus it paves way for practical use 3D models. A special wall function has been developed to overcome non-smoothness problem shear stress in previous methods. Smooth accurate critical importance successful simulation scour. Scour Caused by Three-Dimensional Submerged Square Wall Jet: Sand Deposition in Scour Hole and Ridge

Laboratory tests were carried out to assess the local scour by three-dimensional wall jets from a square crosssection nozzle. To this end, three different tailwater depths were used and the jet expansion ratio was held greater than ten. Velocity measurements were conducted using a one component laser Doppler anemometer. The jet exit Reynolds number was maintained to 1x10 and this value can be c...

Lattice Gas Modeling of Scour

The so-called lattice Boltzmann method is used to implement a numerical model for erosion, transport and deposition of sediment due to the action of a streaming uid. This approach is applied to describe the formation of a scour under a submarine pipe. Both static and dynamic properties of the process are well reproduced by our computer simulations.

Practical Approach to Estimating Realistic Depths of Abutment Scour

Observations of bridge abutment scour lead to a practical new approach for estimating realistic scour IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering depths at bridge abutments. Prior design approaches usually led to unrealistically deep estimates of abutment scour depth. The observations presented stem from flume experiments conducted with abutments with approach embankments subject to a range of erodibilit...

White Paper: Tiltmeter-Based Bridge Scour Monitoring

Scour is by far the primary cause of bridge failures in the United States. Scour and other hydraulic effects are particularly threatening because the deterioration is often invisible , hidden beneath turbid water. Many scour monitoring methods attempt to measure the development of scour pockets themselves. However, this is difficult due to debris — both floating and submerged — and shifting str...

"Status of Scour Instrumentation Development"

Improved understanding of scour and sedimentation processes near and at highway bridges is dependant on collecting reliable field data. Field data collection programs, however, have been hindered by inadequacies in instrumentation and measurement technologies. Through a coordinated program of research, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), State Highway Agencies (SHAs), National Cooperativ...
